Basic Audiometry and Hearing Problems

New Format

School audiometrists administer tests on students to assess and measure hearing. This online course examines the anatomy and physiology of the auditory mechanism including the nature of the acoustic stimulus, hearing disorders, problems of the hard of hearing, and pure-tone audiometry. The course leads to the Certificate of Registration as a School Audiometrist, granted by the California Department of Health Services, upon successful completion (4 units, quarter system).

A computer with Internet access and a reliable e-mail address are required and software must include Microsoft Word. You also need access to a portable audiometer and a proctor (preferably a licensed audiologist, but a certified school audiometrist is acceptable) to sign off on your practical assignments. The final exam is both a written (on the Internet) and a practical (in person) exam that must be proctored by a licensed audiologist. There is also a required textbook. Details of course requirements are sent to students upon registration.
